"In the world ye shall have tribulation [troubles or trials]."- John 16:33

Tribulation is from the Latin word tribulum- a thresher that separates the grain of wheat from the chaff, or waste. Christians are pictured by wheat; and the chaff illustrates the old, useless traits of which we need to rid ourselves. so our troublesome experiences are meant to separate the good, the usable, from that which is worthless. Acts 14:22
